How to use Word Counter
- 1
Add your text
Type or paste into the editor, or open a TXT or DOCX file from Documents. Imported files open as new drafts.
- 2
Watch the counts
Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update as you edit. Reading time gives a rough guide to the length of your piece.
- 3
Keep your draft
Switch between saved documents, copy your text or use Export to keep a separate copy on your device.
For a word limit, check the final destination too
Use the word total for an essay or article, and the character total for a short description. Counters can treat hyphens, punctuation and languages differently. A publishing platform or assignment system may report a different result. Reading time is an estimate, not a measurement of every reader.
Common questions
Does character count include spaces?
The editor shows Characters and No Spaces separately. Use the measure that matches your assignment or publishing limit.
Will my draft still be here when I return?
Drafts save in this browser when storage is available. They do not sync across devices, and clearing browser data can remove them. Export a backup for work you need to keep.
Can I count the words in a scanned document?
TXT and DOCX imports provide text. This counter does not read text from photos or scanned PDFs; extract it with an OCR tool first.
